Jessica Gomez: Thanks to state's failed leadership, working families in Clackamas County face another fee

It's the unfairness of it that really bothers me.

Thanks to Oregon's failed political leadership, working families in Clackamas County have been facing the toughest conditions they've had in years. High inflation. COVID restrictions at work. Difficulty finding affordable childcare. Property taxes climbing. Tents on their sidewalks and rising crime rates. Now, the same group of politicians want to make it harder and more expensive to get to your job. For me, the plan to toll Interstate 205 is just a non-starter.Gomez

Just a couple of years ago, the Legislature raised transportation taxes by $5.3 billion!

Oregonians already pay among the highest gas and weight-mile taxes in the country. It's not fair to make us pay twice for the same road. This kind of fee hits hardest the people who can least afford it. Lower-income residents who are on the cusp of affording personal transportation may be forced to find a job closer to their homes or ride inefficient and sometimes dangerous public transportation.

The cost of transporting freight such as food, clothing and other essentials will soar higher, making it even more difficult to raise a family or make ends meet on a fixed income. Tolls will also shift traffic off the interstate highway and onto side streets and into neighborhoods.

Oregonians who use I-205 should not now have to pay an additional fee to drop their kids off at school, or to keep a doctor's appointment or buy food for their families. As your governor, I will appoint a director of the Oregon Department of Transportation who will stop the plans to toll I-205 dead in its tracks. Oregonians deserve a governor who is on their side for a change.
