Following frustrating finishes at three previous tournaments, the senior Wilsonville wrestler snatched first place in his bracket Jan. 25 at the Hood River Elks Invitational.

Hamilton spent just 3 minutes 9 seconds on the mat, pinning all three of his opponents to win the 195-pound championship. It was the Wildcats’ first individual title of the season.

Hamilton had come agonizingly close to taking top honors several times this season. He placed third Dec. 14 at the Rose City Championship tournament, was a runner-up Dec. 21 at the Oregon National Guard Invitational and took second Jan. 4 at the Don York Invitational.

In a field of eight competitors in his weight class at Hood River Valley High School, Hamilton lived up to his top-seed status.

He defeated Troutdale-Reynolds’ Dalton Holmes by fall in 32 seconds in his first match to reach the semifinals, where he pinned Bend-Mountain View’s Spencer Klein in 2:08.

That victory vaulted him into the title bout, where he put The Dalles’ Joseph Linebarger on his back in just 29 seconds to claim top honors.

Hamilton logged three of Wilsonville’s nine pins during the one-day event.

Wildcats senior Sam Garrison (220) was the program’s only other placer, winning three of his five matches to take sixth in a bracket won by West Albany senior Steely Smith.

Wilsonville tallied 55 points to finish in 14th place out of 18 teams. Eugene-Churchill (140.5) earned the team title, edging Hood River Valley (135.5), West Albany (129), Scappoose (126) and Gresham-Centennial (121).

The Wildcats will continue their league slate at 7 p.m. Jan. 30 on the road against Parkrose, which was 17th in Hood River. Their next home meet will be held Feb. 6 against Sandy.
