Wilsonville Little League bests Lake Oswego
There was no quit in the Lake Oswego Majors baseball all-stars, but it would be Wilsonville's day Monday, July 9.
Lake Oswego, facing Wilsonville in a District 4 elimination game at Alpenrose Dairy Stadium on Monday, rallied from behind once, rallied from behind again and gave every indication they'd rally yet again.
But there was no quit in Wilsonville's bats either. Wilsonville pushed ahead early, then answered every time Lake Oswego challenged and pulled away to win 11-5. The loss ended Lake Oswego's tournament with a 1-2 record, while Wilsonville improved to 2-1 and went on to face Murrayhill in another elimination game Tuesday, where they were defeated 10-0.
Wilsonville grabbed the early lead on Monday when Justin Schramm led off the top of the first inning with a single to center field, took second on Kainoa Santiago's sacrifice bunt and scored on Colby Turco's hit to center.
Lake Oswego stranded two baserunners in each of its first two at-bats, then saw Wilsonville break through for five runs in the top of the third. There, Wilsonville banged out six hits to grab a 6-0 lead, getting run-scoring singles from Mason Seal, Carter Lam and Mark Wiepert to grab a seemingly safe lead.
It seemed safe, that is, until Lake Oswego's bats got going in the bottom of the third. Lake Oswego got started with a one-out walk by Krebs, an opposite-field single from Mickey McClaskey and scored its first run when Charley Goodwin grounded back to the Wilsonville pitcher and Krebs escaped a rundown between third and home to score his team's first run.
After that, Chris Novitsky brought home two runs with a single to center field and Goodwin scored on a wild pitch by Schramm to bring his team back within 6-4.
The two teams then traded runs in the fourth, with Wilsonville getting back-to-back doubles from Turco and Seal, while Lake Oswego answered with a Trojan single to right, and later, a hard grounder by David Stingle that allowed Trojan to score to make the score 7-5.
But Wilsonville held the upper hand from there, scoring twice in the fifth and twice in the sixth to pull away while Lake Oswego went scoreless in its final two at-bats. In the fifth, Wilsonville got a hard single to left field from Santiago that brought home two runs, and in the sixth, Lam had an RBI single and Wiepert a sacrifice fly to make it 11-5.
For the game, Trojan went 2 for 4 and scored once, while Layne, McClaskey, Stingle and Novitsky each had one hit for LO. Schramm went 3 for 4, Turco was 3 for 3, Seal went 2 for 3 and Lam 2 for 4 for Wilsonville.
Wilsonville was led by coach John Santiago.
