Seniors lead boys soccer in league honors
It was not an easy season for the Wilsonville boys soccer squad. The team went on a preseason run of just 2-4-2, giving up 15 goals in that time. It is worth noting that the teams they lost or battled to a draw against were all from the 6A classification, but the results still indicated a team trying to work out the kinks.
At the start of the regular season, those kinks appeared to still be there. After a 3-1 win over Northwest Oregon Conference (NWOC) foe Scappoose, the Wildcats dropped their next two contests against Milwaukie and La Salle. For a team with designs on reaching the postseason, a gut check was needed.
After dropping the La Salle game, Wilsonville turned a corner. Taking to the road, the team shut out Parkrose 3-0, and followed that up with equally impressive shutouts of St. Helens, Putnam and Hillsboro to end the league season in second place at 5-2.
In the first round of playoffs, the Wildcats made the long trek down to Ashland where they battled to a 2-1 victory. The run of success ended after a heated battle against Central High School resulted in a 1-0 loss.
Despite the disappointing end to the season, the Wildcats were given a slew of all-league honors for their success in the latter half of the regular season.
Receiving first team all-league honors for the Wildcats were senior midfielders Henry Tellez and Zachary Gibson for their work in distributing the ball and helping to diffuse opposing teams' counterattacks.
Receiving second team all-league distinctions were sophomore midfielder Eliab Bautista and senior midfielder Ruben Lopez Camacho. Honorable mentions went to senior forward Damien Foster, sophomore forward Adam Landy, junior midfielder Sam Blohn, junior defender Ryan McCord and senior goalkeeper Zachary Brehm.
