Wilsonville's win streak now stands at 18 after dominating the Pendleton Buckaroos. The win in the quarterfinals of the state tournament moved the Wildcats into the semifinals against Silverton (24-2) on Friday, March 8 at 3:15 p.m.
"I thought we came out playing really well today," Wilsonville coach Chris Roche said after the game. "We didn't take very good care of the ball, and that's going to have to be better against Silverton. They looked really, really good. We'll have to be better than we were today, but we survived and we get to play Friday."
Against Pendleton, Wilsonville found itself in complete control from the start. The team went on a tear through the entirety of the first quarter, outscoring Pendleton 23-4 in the first eight minutes. Senior Jack Roche had eight points in that time, as did junior Dakota Reber.
In the second quarter Wilsonville's offensive output slowed, as the team only made 10 points against Pendleton's 8. The Wildcats went into the locker room with a commanding 33-12 lead.
At the half, Wilsonville 45 percent from the field, and 85 percent from the free throw line. Reber had 10 points at the half.
Coming out of the break, Wilsonville nearly matched its first quarter offensive output by putting up 22 points. In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats further extended their lead by scoring 15 points. At the end of the day, Wilsonville walked away with the win 70-40.
Pendleton's Tyler Newsom was the leading scorer for the Buckaroos, putting up 21 points for his team. Considering he put up over 40 points against Parkrose in the opening round of the playoffs, Roche was happy with the way his defense handled Pendleton's star player, particularly junior Dakota Reber.
"We assigned him to Newsom, and he accepted that challenge and I thought he did great," Roche said. "He did a lot of little things that are going to show in the box scores."
Junior Keegan Shivers led the team in scoring with 14 points and five steals. Fellow junior Reber had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Jack Roche had 13 points with 7 assists.
Silverton advanced to the semifinals after dispatching Crater in the quarterfinals.
