Wilsonville travels to Dallas Friday night for jamboree, opens season Sept. 6 at home against Crater

Wilsonville put on full pads for the first time last Thursday and on Saturday, the Wildcats got their first full live-game action.

"I was actually pretty pleased," Wilsonville head coach Adam Guenther said after the intrasquad scrimmage. "Most people knew where they were supposed to be going, and now it's just a matter of fine-tuning little things and really getting better at it and quicker at it."

Wilsonville graduated 35 seniors and returns just two starters off last season's squad that reached the Class 5A state championship game.

"I want to see who is going to rise up and take advantage of it, and this was the first step, a continued evaluation," Guenther said. "This provided what we wanted to see and what we were hoping to see. We wanted to see who understood what we were doing. It was our opportunity to catch these guys at full speed and see who would handle that pressure and who wouldn't."

The competition included quarterback, where junior Jayce Knapp and sophomore Chase Hix split reps.

"I like the competition and that our kids have a competitive streak in them," Guenther said. "I like the speed. They play the game pretty fast."

The next step is seeing how the Wildcats measure up against another team.

Wilsonville travels to Dallas this Friday for a jamboree against the host Dragons, South Eugene and reigning 5A state champion Thurston.

The Wildcats open the regular season Sept. 6 at home against Crater.
