Let your voices be heard
Are you a high schooler with a passion for writing and sharing your opinions? If so, becoming a student columnist or a member of our Student Writers Advisory Group (SWAG) for the Wilsonville Spokesman might be right up your alley.
This opportunity is a great way to become published, gain journalism experience and meet other talented writers from local high schools.
As a staff, we know high school students are our eyes and ears into local schools and communities. We value your opinions and want to allow your voices to be heard.
Student columnists will be expected to write more frequent, longer columns on a topic of choice, whereas SWAG members will attend monthly meetings to discuss various topics to get ideas flowing before settling on an idea that interests the group.
SWAG member articles will be shorter and less frequent — more fitting for a busy student or less-experienced writer.
Being a student columnist or SWAG member, you will be expected to adhere to a strict deadline and will need to be committed to sending in frequent copy with a specific word count.
The aspiring student writers will be chosen by staff after applying to be part of a team of unique voices for the youth in our community. To apply, students will need to submit a cover letter by June 1 explaining why they want to be a columnist, along with their writing experience and two writing samples. The groups will be formed by the start of the 2019-20 academic year.
You count on us to stay informed and we depend on you to fund our efforts. Quality local journalism takes time and money. Please support us to protect the future of community journalism.
