West Linn-Wilsonville School District removes COVID-19 dashboard
The West Linn-Wilsonville School District will no longer update its COVID-19 dashboard after the Oregon Department of Education gave control on such matters to local entities.
A recent Oregon Department of Education decision allows almost all policies on COVID-19 safety procedures to fall into the hands of school districts, such as reporting protocols. Due to this change, the WL-WV district will no longer keep track of positive cases and instead asks families to report through Oregon Health Authority's portal.
Families are still advised to follow quarantine and isolation protocols in the event of positive test results.
"It's becoming increasingly challenging, especially with positive cases and not knowing about all of them," said district communications director Andrew Kilstrom. "We know students might be home sick, but we don't necessarily know if they tested positive unless a family tells us."
The district is not the only entity that chose to forgo its COVID-19 dashboards this year; Portland Public School District and Gresham will no longer update the community on positive cases, according to their websites. Other schools in the Portland metro area, like Lake Oswego will continue to update their dashboards.
With the state-mandated change, all school districts also were required to submit a COVID-19 management plan by late August and encouraged to consult with local health authorities when creating their plans (the WL-WV district did so).
The district regularly consults with the Clackamas County Public Health Division and Oregon Department of Education, according to its website. The district mapped out management plans for each school.
Most plans were similar to one another. Each school has a safety team representative to handle all COVID-19 matters and outbreak prevention protocols.
